Pastor Nancy BassPastor Nancy Bass
Greetings! My name is Nancy Bass, and I’m thrilled to be here at Erin Presbyterian Church serving as your Pastor. Native to Detroit's Eastside, I am excited about the opportunity to serve this community.

I completed my Seminary studies at ETS in Detroit. After successfully passing oral and written exams, I was granted permission to move forward with my internship year. In 2001, I was blessed with the opportunity to complete this internship at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church under the supervision of Dr. Rev. Scott Miller. Drayton Avenue offered a broad range of experiences for a new intern. From reading scripture, preaching, and leading worship to pastoral care, small group studies, youth group activities, teaching confirmation & new member classes, and commission meetings. These experiences all offered teachable moments that have shaped my ministry. Since that time, I’ve had a fairly busy schedule with Pulpit fill opportunities. This past summer, I was hired at First Presbyterian Church Royal Oak to serve as their Interim Director of Youth Ministries until their Candidate arrived in October.

Prior to entering the ministry the majority of my secular employment focused on service. For approximately 8 years I worked for Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. I directed the Katrina Aid Today program for the first 3 years. When that program ended, I transferred to The Wayne County Family Center – one of Michigan’s largest homeless shelters – as the Facilities Manager. From the WCFC, I was asked to join the team at Heartline, a Residential Re-Entry Center for female offenders leaving the Criminal Justice System. I served nearly five years as a Case Manager & Offender Employment Specialist at Heartline, with a concentration in counseling those with mental health and co-dependency/dual diagnosis issues. Before my tenure with LSSM, I worked in the desktop publishing industry and served as financial secretary at a local church. My initial entry into the workforce was in the Criminal Justice field serving as a private security consultant/programmer to the Stroh Brewery Company and being an auxiliary police officer with the City of Detroit.

My professional life has been aiding those in need – the evacuees in Hurricane Katrina, and the under privileged – the homeless in the Detroit community. However, it was my working with Katrina evacuees via Lutheran Disaster Response & Presbyterian Disaster Assistance that really moved me forward in something I had been thinking about for a number of years. “When a path appears, don’t hesitate. Start where you are & take what you have. Though you may not know exactly where the road will lead, be assured that you are already prepared for the journey.” This quote given to me on the first of what would be many journeys taken as I negotiated the Katrina maze, moved me toward my future. Already a Stephen Minister, I viewed being a Commissioned Ruling Elder as the next step on my path of discernment. Some are called early in life to pursue ministry; I however have had diverse experiences that have led me to this moment of becoming your Pastor.
